Determine why texture is needed
Choose a specific goal: add a papery feel, make the background less flat, or tie several elements together with a common texture. If the problem only sounds like «сделать интереснее», first compare other solutions: framing, color, and white space. The texture should not hide a weak composition.
For a learning experience, you can use one of the eight open crystal backdrops . These are ready-made images, and not special seamless textures. It is convenient to frame them and limit them with a mask, but you should not expect imperceptible repetition over the entire surface.
Place the material on a separate layer
Keep the photo unchanged. Add texture above and try a few scales. Large details can clash with the object, and very small ones can disappear after reduction. First, select an area of the image that matches the direction of the lines and the density of the pattern.
Start with a low opacity and a normal blend. If the editor supports blending modes, compare several suitable options in one photo. The name of the mode does not guarantee the desired effect: the result depends on the light and dark areas of the two images. Evaluate a specific shot.
Protect important areas with a mask
- Add a mask to the texture layer while still being able to bring back details.
- Reduce or hide texture over the face, logo, and important parts of the product.
- Leave a more noticeable overlay in the background and secondary areas.
- Check the transitions: the rough border of the mask should not look like a cut out piece.
- Compare the image with the original at the same scale.
A soft transition is not suitable everywhere. For a hard edge on an object, a precise limit may be needed. Don't blur the entire mask automatically: the texture may reappear on the object. Check the border on a contrast matte or temporarily increase the layer opacity to see the problem.
Match color and text
If the texture changes the tone of the skin or product, first reduce its effect, then decide whether color correction is needed. In a commercial image, the color of the product may be more important than the decorative effect. Do not pass off the changed packaging texture as a real property of the product.
Place the text above the layers of photography and texture unless you are trying to achieve a special artistic effect. For clarification, leave a quiet area. When letters hit high-contrast details, it's better to reduce the texture's intensity behind them rather than adding increasingly stronger strokes. Check readability in the size of the publication.
Check the result after reduction
Export your proof and open it next to your original photo. See if the object, color and meaning of the image are preserved. If the texture is more noticeable than the theme, lower its opacity or use a smaller area. A good overlay should accomplish the intended task.
Save your project with a mask to quickly adapt the effect to another frame. Copying the same settings to a new photo will require a new check. For a text composition there is analysis of readability on a textured background , and practical free sets are collected here .
Assets for your next layouts
Designer's Pack 2026 has backgrounds, textures and effects for layouts. Before using a new material, test it on your photo and save the version without overlay.
