How to edit a PSD template: replace text and images, keep the original

PSD is useful when it is clear what is inside and which layers can be changed. We will show you a safe procedure for editing: from a working copy to checking the finished banner.

First save a working copy

Don't start editing the only file in the set. Make a copy with the name of the project and leave the original nearby. This way you can return to the original structure if you accidentally delete a layer or apply a change that is difficult to undo. Save the images you are going to insert separately.

Open the file in an editor that supports PSD and check how it interprets layers and effects. Format support does not mean treating all possibilities equally. If the layout looks different from the preview, figure out the reason first rather than correcting the entire composition at random.

Explore the layer structure

Find background, image, text and decor groups. Hide them one by one to understand their purpose. Check where the masks are and what elements are combined. If the caption appears as text, it can still be a regular bitmap image: editability is determined by the layer type.

Before replacing a font, check to see if there is a notice about the missing style. Do not accept random substitution without verification. A different font may change the line length, thickness, and placement of letters. If the font you need is not available, find an available alternative and test its use in your project.

Replace elements one at a time

  1. Change the title and check line breaks, width and spacing.
  2. Replace the explanation while maintaining the role of the text block.
  3. Insert the new image and match its scale and angle.
  4. Check the mask: an old constraint may cut off an important part of a new item.
  5. Adjust the background and color only after the content is already placed.

If the image is placed inside a smart object, first examine its contents and how to save it in your editor of choice. Do not stretch the new item along one axis to replicate the frame of the old one. For the exercise, you can take PNG from the free set , maintaining the proportions of the object.

Check the effects after replacement

The shadow and stroke that worked well on an old object may not work well on a new one. First compare the option without additional effects. PNGs may already have their own highlights and shadows. Several superimposed shadows can create the feeling that an object is illuminated from different angles.

Re-read all text layers: the date, name or price from the example may remain in the template. View hidden groups if you are going to transfer the source. Don't leave unconfirmed data as a real offer. The layout needs to be coordinated in content in the same way as a completely independent design.

Save the project and export separately

The working file with layers and the finished image solve different problems. Save the modified PSD under a new name, then export the image in the desired format. Open the export separately and check the text, edges, size and absence of stray elements. Evaluating within the editor does not replace reviewing the finished file.

For future edits, keep a list of replaced fonts and the original images nearby. If the layout is needed in different proportions, use banner adaptation procedure. It will help to organize the materials themselves. library folder structure.
